Pipworth Viaduct Rock Armour Scour Protection

Client: Amco Giffen for Network Rail
Duration: 6 weeks
Location: River Rother, Killamarsh, Sheffield.

Pipworth Viaduct was identified as being affected by functional scour and Amco Giffen appointed Robert Nicholas to undertake all riparian aspects of the project. This included installation of temporary works, namely watercourse diversion and environmental control to dewater and isolate each bridge pier. Alternate ‘hit and miss’ excavations were made around the structure to a depth of 3.0m below bed level with excavation support, followed placement of D50 Rock Armour Stone to ensure the entire riverbed beneath the structure was protected against future scour.

The works were delivered in December and despite inclement conditions and the temporary works being inundated the project was delivered to the quoted timescale.

On completion of the in-river works, Robert Nicholas reinstated and improved adjacent earthen flood bunds to ensure they complied with current Environment Agency specifications.
