Shalford Mill Stoplog Replacement

Client: National Trust
Duration: 1 month
Location: Shalford Mill, Guildford

Overview

The National Trust required urgent works at Shalford Mill, near Guildford, to replace failed stoplogs controlling river flow beneath the historic mill building. The location presented multiple challenges: limited access via a neighbouring property, a confined working space directly under a public right of way, and the need to manage water flow without disturbing accumulated silt. The works had to be completed quickly to prevent further risk to the structure and maintain safe operation of the river system.

Why We Were Chosen

We were selected for our specialist expertise in temporary damming, confined space operations, and sensitive water management at heritage structures. Our ability to provide pragmatic solutions within tight timeframes and environmentally sensitive conditions aligned with the National Trust’s requirements.

Solution

We designed and implemented a practical method to isolate and replace the failed stoplogs. Initial discussions considered diverting flows through the sluice gate; however, the heavily silted condition presented risks of turbidity. Instead, the site team adopted an alternative controlled diversion method, calculating safe water level increases to achieve bypass augmented with an 8” road tow pump, and restoring normal flow at the end of each shift.

Access and safety were key challenges. The team worked within a confined space under the mill while ensuring the public right of way above remained open and safe. Close liaison with the National Trust and neighbouring landowners allowed works to proceed with minimal disruption.

The stoplogs were replaced using SHS timber planks, restoring function to the weir. Despite last-minute procurement pressures, the project was delivered on programme and within budget. The flexibility and professionalism of the site team ensured a successful outcome under demanding conditions.

Following a recommendation to us by one of our existing suppliers, who you regularly partner with, we appointed RNL in August 2025 to undertake a small essential repairs project in a challenging location. Your reliability, flexibility and solution-focused approach has been vital in successfully completing the works. You were also considerate of our budget constraints from the outset, and I look forward to working with you again.”
